I took this photo on 44th Street in midtown Manhattan, across the street from where our son’s new musical, “Illinoise,” was opening in late April. It is outside The Majestic Theatre, where “Phantom of the Opera” played for 35 years and became (by far) the longest running Broadway musical.
It also serves as a reminder that all shows eventually close, as “Illinoise” does tonight following a 16-week limited run that no one expected when the first workshops began more than two years ago. It is a magical story and show.
Starting in 1988, “Phantom” ran for more than 13,000 performances, and by the time the run ended in April 2023, The Majestic was long overdue for a refresh. It is scheduled to reopen this fall with a production of “Gypsy” featuring seven-time Tony winner Audra McDonald.
At the St. James Theatre will be another revival — “Sunset Boulevard.” Everything old, it seems, is new again.
Below are the rest of the week’s photos. Each has a short caption that includes the place and month/year it was taken. As always, I hope you’ll pick your favorite(s) and let me know your thoughts. I’m happy to provide additional context on any of the photos in the comments section — just ask!
