Perhaps it’s because of our proximity to the “activities” now taking place in Washington, D.C., the recency bias of going to another country, or a restless itch to travel, but taking a trip outside the continental U.S. has great appeal these days.
That made me think of the trips we have taken to far-flung places over the past decade. We went to Toronto in 2015, Switzerland and Paris the next year, Italy in 2017, Puerto Rico in 2019 and again last year, Hawaii in 2020, a different part of Italy last year, and Mexico City in January.
I’ve posted “Visual Stories” about several of those trips — more are coming soon — but decided to go with a loosely themed post this week that focuses on photos taken outside the 48 states. (I haven’t been to Alaska yet, sadly).
Hope you enjoy them.
A Quick Reminder
I’m continuing to take pre-orders for my first photo book — Keep Your Distance: Walking through the first year of COVID. The 64-page hardback book, which has 70 images taken in four cities, is available for $40 plus $5.95 shipping (pre-order here).
I also am writing a series of short “behind the scenes" posts about the book and its creation. The first appeared this week.
I don’t know what it is about “Narrow Path” in Venice that grabs me the way your shots of alleys and urban passageways always do. Maybe the way the camera catches the curves, the crevices, sees the end of the tunnel, without suggesting there’s anything else on the other side. It’s the place itself that matters.
