May 18, 2018: Santa Fe, Texas
A guide to my reporting and writing on the Santa Fe High School shooting
On May 18, 2018, 10 people were killed and 13 injured in an early morning shooting at Texas’ Santa Fe High School. The shooting is the fifth largest mass casualty event in K-12 education history in the United States.
In December 2018, the American School Board Journal published “After It All Falls Apart,” a feature I wrote about the community just 12 miles from where I grew up. Four years later, the magazine published “Moving Forward,” my story examining the community’s resilience and slow path to recovery.
After the second visit in September 2022, I wrote about the challenges of this type of reporting.
Once the second story was published in December 2022, I wrote profiles on five of the subjects I interviewed as well as a sixth piece on the district’s “Unfinished Business” and published them on this site. Those profiles can be found by scrolling through the individual links below.
