I especially liked the Lorton Va. abandoned prison, not only because I am a fan of B&W but I am also drawn to places we've built and left, never understanding the need to remove the debris from the structure. There are many of these including factories, workshops, etc. that have yet to be turned into apartments or condos. They just sit and rot. The America my kids will see and wonder why.
Thanks for the comment, Frank. Interestingly, the prison has since been turned into a museum. It was the location where the suffragettes were taken prior to gaining the right to vote.
Like you, I've long been fascinated by places that have been abandoned and left behind. It feeds into my interest in history as well as the failures/successes of urban and rural planning. When photographing these buildings, I think of them in human terms, as if they were once young and vital, but now are struggling to hold onto their dignity as they slowly fade into the past.
That's how I feel about abandoned farm houses all over the Piedmont of NC. Once there was laughter, home cooking, celebrations, births, deaths, and chores. Now they are merely rotting structures with stories lost within the walls.

The Potomac reflection is gorgeous! I love the colors.
Thank you!
