Some years ago (maybe 6?) my pup and a Coopers Hawk were engaged in a stare-off: Hawk on our fence, April on our back stairs. It felt like I was watching an episode of Mutual Of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom.” I later learned that Coopers Hawks preferred prey were other avian creatures, so April was safe.
We also had a hawk visitor a few days ago! We think it was a juvenile learning how to hunt. There are several hawks in the area but we had never seen one just sitting in one of our backyard trees.
Incidentally, we had a similar experience this week. Our new home in Milwaukee is on a river parkway. Across the street is a trail system winding through the woods. Our two dogs especially love the smells on their new turf which includes coyotes.
On a morning walk this week, we heard the flutter of wings and looked up to see an enormous turkey vulture with the wingspan of Victor Wenbanyama flying to a higher tree and staring down at us. It felt ominous and sure enough, about fifty feet ahead on the trail, was a disemboweled creature. It was a good reminder that we're just part of this ecosystem.
Thanks for reading and commenting! I’m not sure where the hawk came from in my case, although a neighbor said she had seen one on an adjacent street about six weeks ago. Powerful creatures.

Not sure what type of hawk this was, but definitely was one I wouldn’t like to encounter in a dark alleyway.
Above the shadow is so cool. Love it Glenn
Thanks, Shital! Admire and enjoy your work too.
Nice photos!

As I wrote, it was eerie and unsettling. Thanks for reading!
